The ice hockey puck is standard - but a true must have
Without a puck, there will be no match. This little piece of rubber makes all the action and even though it comes in different designs, the regulations regarding the ice hockey puck are very strict. The official regulation size of ice hockey pucks are 1 inch (25 mm) thick, 3 inches (76 mm) in diameter, and weighs between 5.5 and 6 ounces (156 and 170 g). If a puck is produced in measures that differ from this, it won’t make any sense practicing with it, since you will be playing with a different ice hockey puck in matches.
What is inside a hockey puck?
The material used in a classic puck is vulcanized rubber. The rubber has gone through a chemical treatment that makes the rubber very resistant to all kinds of abuse and beating. Other than vulcanized rubber there is nothing inside the puck. No piece of steel or sand in the middle. This consistency in the material -again- adds to the durability and lifespan of the puck.
Before a hockey match or training session, the puck is usually brought to freezing temperatures to reduce bouncing during the match or training.
What happened to the firepuck?
Some of you might remember the so-called firepuck, that appeared in the early 1990´s. The firepuck was produced in a different material, that aimed to improve the visibility of hockey pucks when seen on television.
The lifecycle turned out to be rather short for the firepuck since there weren't any significant enhancement in the spectator experience. Besides that, the structural change in the material made the puck more likely to bounce off the ice, which made it harder for the goaltender to stop the puck. For this reason, we saw a significant increase in the number of goals in this period.
