Advantages of the all mountain ski
As the name suggests, all-mountain skis are versatile skis, suitable for the skiing disciplines piste & off-piste and sometimes even park. All mountain skis are for everybody who wishes to vary their skiing style and experience and ski in different areas. Instead of buying a pair of skis for every discipline, you can buy one pair of all mountain skis that you can use for almost everything. However, if you are only into performing tricks or racing downhill, you should have a look at the specific category to find skis specifically for your needs.
In general, all mountain skis are quite wide and have high tips, which is an advantage when skiing off-piste. Nonetheless, they are apt for the piste as well. A narrower ski will often be great for piste, while a wider ski will be extra suitable for off-piste skiing. If you are skiing piste just as often as off-piste, it might be a good idea to choose an all mountain ski with a medium width, as these are typically equally apt for both kinds of skiing.
Most all mountain skis have a combined Camber and Rocker baseline because they must perform well in different disciplines. However, some models are available with an all Camber or all Rocker baseline.
The difference between Backcountry skis and All Mountain skis
Because the all mountain ski has to be versatile, the construction is often inspired by elements from other types of skis, such as backcountry or twintip skis. Backcountry skis are wide, which makes it easier to stay on top of the snow. The backcountry skis are also known as freeride skis or off-piste skis, and they are designed for the freshly fallen powder snow in the off-piste. Typically, the width under the foot will be 100 mm or more. Some of the skis in the all mountain category will also be great for backcountry skiing. This will appear from the product specifications.
Read more about the different all mountain skis on each product description, to find out which disciplines they are suitable for and which baseline they have.
