Quick Tips Before Buying a New Deck
- Make sure your wheel width and wheel diameter are compatible with the deck
- Make sure to get griptape (assuming the deck does not include griptape)
- Match the deck to your riding style
- Choose the right width and length for your preferences
Scooter Deck Compatibility Checklist
- Wheel size: Check the specs to see if it matches the diameter of your wheels. If the maximum wheel size is less than your wheel diameter, they do not match.
- Wheel hub width: Make sure that the deck is compatible with the width of your wheel's hub (pro scooter wheel hubs are either 24 mm or 30 mm wide).
All modern pro scooter decks are made for integrated headset bearings. If you have an SCS-setup, you may need to add a headset spacer for the compression to work with your new deck.
Street vs Park: Which Scooter Deck Fits Your Style?
Street riders need durability above all else. A street scooter deck is designed to withstand the rigors of stunts that are part of street-riding. Street scooter decks are robust and wide to endure grinds on ledges and handrails, and to survive the impacts of jumping down huge staircases. They are typically between 5 and 7 inches wide.
A park scooter deck excels in dedicated skateparks and typically they are narrower than street decks. The reduced width allows for quicker maneuverability and faster rotations during air tricks.
- Park scooter decks prioritize responsiveness for technical tricks, and therefore they are smaller and lighter
- Street scooter decks prioritize durability and are heavier and wider
Scooter Deck Width and Length
Deck size directly affects how your scooter rides. A wide scooter deck offers more balance and foot room, which makes it a good choice for street riding. A narrow deck is lighter, spins faster, and feels more agile which is ideal for park riding.
- Park deck width: usually 4.5–5.25 inches wide
- Street decks width: usually 5–7 inches wide
- Shorter scooter decks: better for whips and fast rotations
- Longer scooter decks: more stable for manuals and landings
Box Cut vs Peg Cut: Understanding Scooter Deck Shapes
A box cut deck features straight, perpendicular edges. This design maximizes foot space and grinding surface. Box cut decks work perfectly for ledge tricks and technical street riding. The sharp corners lock into obstacles with precision.
A peg cut deck has angled cutouts near the dropouts. A peg cut deck is essential if you would like to install pegs on your setup.
Scooter Deck Weight: Lightweight vs Heavy Decks
If you're debating whether to opt for a heavier or lighter scooter deck, consider the following.
- Lighter scooter decks spins a lot faster when you're doing tail whips and the likes
- Heavier scooter decks feel more stable and they can endure harder impacts
Modern pro scooter decks are made from aluminum which offers a perfect balance between robustness and low weight.
Headtube Angle on Pro Scooter Decks
Headtube angle affects your riding position. Standard angles range from 82 to 84 degrees.
- A steeper angle provides quicker steering response
- A lower angle offers more stability at speed.
Keep Your New Scooter Deck in Top-Shape
Quality scooter decks last years with proper care. Here's some advice:
- Apply grease to the bearing cups when installing the headset
