Every scooter needs new griptape from time to time – below, you’ll find useful info before making a purchase.
How to Know If the Griptape Fits Your Scooter
Most scooter griptape is designed to be trimmed to fit. Standard sheets measure around 5-7 inches wide and 20-24 inches long, which covers most pro scooter decks. Measure your deck’s width and length to ensure proper coverage before buying.
- Find the width and length of the griptape in the product specifications.
- Compare them to the width and length of your deck.
- You can always cut the griptape down, but you can’t stretch it to fit.
If you ride a wider or uniquely shaped deck, choose a sheet with extra width or length – we have skateboard griptapes that go up to around 10 inches.
Pre-Cut Griptape vs. Sheets
Scooter griptape comes in two main types: full sheets and pre-cut.
Sheets give you maximum flexibility. You can shape them to fit any deck, giving you the freedom to choose the exact griptape that suits your style and preferences.
Pre-cut griptape is designed to match specific deck shapes and doesn’t require trimming. It’s a convenient choice if you’re unsure how to trim griptape to size properly. Ensure the pre-cut version matches your deck’s dimensions.
When to Change Scooter Griptape?
Griptape provides friction against your shoes so they don’t slip on the deck. Thanks to your griptape, you can send the deck flying more easily. You also catch the deck more reliably when landing tricks, and you feel more secure while grinding because the griptape helps keep your feet locked in. Feel free to add to the list of advantages – they’re all tied to one key factor: grip.
Worn or smooth griptape offers less friction, which means all those benefits become less effective as the grip fades.
Is it time to replace your griptape? Only you can decide – but if you’ve asked yourself that question, chances are it’s already wearing down, and it’s only a matter of time before you take action.
Replacing your griptape restores the control and traction you need for precise foot placement and consistent performance.
Can I Apply My Own Griptape?
Yes, you can. Check out our video guide on how to apply scooter griptape. If you’re unsure whether you can do it properly, find someone who’s up for the challenge.
Practical Advice
Unless your deck is brand new, you’ll need to remove the old griptape first. A hairdryer can help loosen the adhesive, making it easier to peel off. Before applying new griptape, clean the deck surface to remove any adhesive residue.
It’s also important to avoid trapping air bubbles under the tape. Bubble-free griptape ensures maximum durability – and it’s much more pleasing to the eye. Some griptapes are perforated, which makes bubble-free application even easier.
